In Hollywood the sun shines in December but the traditional white Christmas is available if you have the dollars, reports Elaine Lipworth How to fake Christmas in TINSELTOWN

ERHAPS IT'S the absence of anything naturally Christmassy that makes Hollywood go overboard at this time of year. There's no chance of snow and no need for huddling up in winter coats, yet go to any PHollywood party between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and you'll find yourself drinking mulled wine and roasting chestnuts to a soundtrack of Away In A Manger. After 12 years in sunny Santa Monica I've concluded that the effort and money spent on presents and parties is part of a desperate search for a nostalgic festive season that can't really exist here. Christmas, like everything else, has to be make-believe. Customers spend up to $10,000 on festooning their houses and gardens with fairy lights.
