This tasteless joke should be consigned to history

HERE are at least three places in the country where the seasonal spirit is not exactly glowing with good will. At her luxury home, Lady (Carla) Powell, the highly opinionated, socialite Italian-born wife of Lord (Charles) Powell, former foreign policy aide to Margaret Thatcher, worries about social ostracism. The row follows anti-Israeli remarks by the ambassador at a dinner at Ms Amiel's home, and anti-Semitic remarks reportedly attributed to Lady Powell (vehemently denied by her) and recorded in a fiery article by Ms Amiel, who is Jewish, in her husband's paper.

AIN DUNCAN SMITH'S battle for recognition continues apace. Fresh from delivering I a technical knockout against Tony Blair in Prime Minister's questions on Wednesday, IDS took his life - or at least his overstretched vocal cords - in his hands and threw a well-attended bunfight for the reporters who have commented repeatedly about the frog in his throat.
