ROBERT Troops must fight terror not enter a tribal tangle
T IS a terrible mistake by the Government to commit British troops to lead the so called "stabilisation force" in Afghanistan. The Government was right to use our armed forces to assist the Americans in fighting international terrorism and in dismantling the A I l Qaeda network, but it is neither necessary nor appropriate to risk British servicemen's lives keeping the peace between warring Afghan tribes in Kabul. And they do not have sufficient resources to do that adequately. Once again, British soldiers' lives are being risked because Tony Blair wants to posture as the great power broker. Indeed, he is not far removed in his fantasies from the excitable little Belgian foreign minister and EU foreign affairs spokesman, Louis Michel.
