THE SURPRISE hit of the 2001: year has to be Billy (HarperCollins, £17.99) , the biography of the entertainer Billy Connolly by his wife, Pamela Stephenson. However, for me the best book of the year was Charles Hawtrey 1914-1988: The Man Who Was Private Widdle, by Roger Lewis (Faber, £9.99) - a curious little biography of an equally curious little man, whose name now probably means little to those under 40.
Stretton, appears determined to impose his homeland favourites in Covent Garden and Northern Ballet Theatre's new director, American David Nixon, is following suit with his own Madame Butterfly in Leeds in February.
